AMP Energy

AMP Energy

14th April 2012

What do you do, when you are shattered and failing miserably to stay awake, just before formal night begins? Some say drink coffee, others Red Bull but Monster is what I unwillingly choose, if desperate measures must be taken.

Unfortunately, the crew shop had completely ran out of Monster. Of course, it was a good thing for me in the long run. However, someone suggested trying a new drink called Amp Energy. The name itself made me smile (AMP for us photogs means Assistant Manager of Production). Picking it up, I paid and walked to my cabin to get changed.

Never in my life have I read the back of a drink can, looking for instructions on how to drink it. I cracked open the can, downed half, before jumping in the shower and the rest just before leaving my cabin.

In the atrium Carolee was setting up her pentab. She’s shooting the Mickey Statue tonight while I smudge and pose the guests. It’s strange the Hotel Director and Csaba want us to be less Royal Caribbean (say “Please” and “thank you” at the end of everything and take more time talking to them - bullshit, in other words) . When I mentioned to Csaba that he’d put the two Royal Caribbeans together his eyes widened but with a knowing smile on his face. I think he wants to see what we can do together.

Looking at me, Carolee suspiciously demanded “what’s wrong with you?”. I laughed. Almost instantly she knew I’d been drinking energy drinks again. All she could say was “Oh Jesus” before shaking her head and looking the other way.

It wasn’t long until the Amp Energy really kicked in. Asking me how much I’d drink, I said the can, in one go. Then I found out from Carolee that if you read on the back of the can, you’re supposed only drink half a can at a time. Using one half as a top up. I, on the other hand, had overdosed on energy drink.

Soon my legs were moving in the opposite direction to what I’d wanted. My words were apparently coming out slurred, although to me they were just a mad rush. Csaba came over to the Mickey Statue and soon saw the obvious surge of energy I had. Carolee told him I’d been on the energy drinks again which just so happened to amuse Csaba.

When the busy period came, Mike took over, posing the guests. Csaba and I had to keep the crowds back as everyone was surging into the dining room. One of the dining room entrances is situated just behind the Mickey Statue, so at 17.30 hoards of people line up outside for 15 minutes, before the place opens. As soon as the doors open, everyone starts scrambling forward to get inside. Honestly, you’d think the guests hadn’t seen food for a week or more, the way they behave!!

Anyway, in the frenzie, guests started to hand me things to hold on to, while having their photo taken – bags, litre glasses and even a walking stick! While running and skipping around like a fool, high on Amp Engery, holding back the crowd and holding on to piles of guests belongings, I was getting plenty of laughs from the guests. Carolee was doing her part in winding the crowd up a bit by saying I’m crazy and have a screw lose.

A couple of times I resorted to hiding behind the Mickey Statue while Carolee took a portrait and signalling to guests to stay back. A couple of people didn’t listen and gave us abrupt statements “We are going to dinner!” -  Really? I wondered why you’d go into the dining room at this time of evening…

For the last session, I was in the lab printing. I am now the lab bitch. Before though, I had to run into the crew shop, not for more energy drinks but for a crate of water. I desperately needed to calm down or else I’d be wake until the small hours of the morning. Csaba and Mike were still poking fun and laughing about it all. I don’t blame them. Turns out Carolee even took some sneaky photos of me while I was acting the prat. There was only one photo that I know she took – I posed on the stairs with a lady’s walking stick in my hand as if I was in some kind of Cabaret show.

By the end of the night, everyone was laughing at the stories Carolee was telling. My eyes, according to a few photographers, were wide open, deer to headlights kind and my pupils abnormally large, making me appear high.

AMP Energy far worse/more effective than Monster, depending on which way you look at it. Lying in bed, my legs were switching and I still felt full of energy, as if I could run a marathon and beat Paula Radcliffe.

During dinner we found out that Maryna is being transferred to Disney Wonder in Port Canaveral. No one had any idea as to who would be coming to replace her, although I had heard it was a new hire from either Serbia or Croatia. Another new hire wasn’t a thought any of us relished. Our fingers were crossed… actually, everything we could cross was crossed in the hope of getting someone with experience and a willingness to actually work rather than stagger behind waiting for us to pick up the pieces.

Girls Night In

Girl’s Night In

11th February 2011

It’s turn around day today. The start of a new cruise and I finally get to lose my “Earning My Ears” ribbon.

After 4.5 hours sleep I had to attend immigration at 05.45 at the Walt Disney Theatre for my I-95. The I-95 is a small slip of paper stamped by U.S. Immigration and allowed me access to U.S. owned ports such as Port Canaveral, St. Maarten, Key West etc. Without it, you simply have to stay on the ship. Needless to say, after immigration I went straight back to bed but, sod’s law, I couldn’t sleep until 1 hour before I had to get up and get ready for work.

Maryna has been signed off work with G.I. – another one bites the dust! Left on embarkation was Mark, Bjanca and myself. Embarkation on Disney Magic doesn’t last as long as it did on Mariner of the Seas, probably because there’s a lot less guests. 98% wanted their photos taken. I think I took about 300 images. Here on Disney things are quite slow paced because of the children, whereas on Royal Caribbean we used to rush everyone through as quickly as possible to get the counts up.

Speaking to Bjanca (Croatia) during a break we spoke about the things we wanted to do during our contracts. There’s not a huge amount to do in the Caribbean apart from go to the beach and let’s be honest, that can get a bit boring sometimes. We wanted some excitement! This cruise is the Eastern Caribbean cruise so we’ll be docking at St. Maarten. If we have enough time to get off the ship, we are planning on heading to Airport Beach to go Jet Blasting. If you don’t know what it is, it’s when you get blasted by aeroplane jets! Look it up on Youtube.com and you’ll see a number of videos on the subject.

After embarkation I had a three hour break. First thing was first, persuading myself to get to the gym, which I finally did. I was the only one in there, so I stuck my headphones in my ears and started running. I only did 45 minutes in the gym, but it’s a start. My main worry is pulling a muscle and then having to lift/pull/drag heavy loads at work. The studio light bags weigh a ton and have to be dragged half way across the ship! Broken wheels on the bags doesn't help either! Anyway, I’ll be going again tomorrow so hopefully I’ll be able to spend a bit longer in the gym.

Back at the cabin I tried calling the parents but without success. I’m getting a bit worried now as they haven’t been picking up the phone for two days. I hope Mama hasn’t been admitted into hospital again.

Today I was shooting three sessions of character, Sailor Mickey Mouse and Goofy. The first session was pretty slow, the second picked up and the third was dead until the last 10 minutes. We ended up staying an extra 15 minutes as we got so busy. In total I took about 400 images but missed my target by 50-100 shots. It wasn’t bad and if the people aren’t around, what can you do? Nothing.

During one of my breaks, I left my camera hidden in a corner of my studio, hidden behind a pelican case. While at dinner Carolee told me Dave the BM was looking for me. When she said why, I darted down from deck 9 to deck 3. Dave was nowhere to be seen and my camera was still there but this time on show. For someone who was so annoyed at me for leaving my camera out, although hidden, he’d left it there. Also, why uncover it when it was perfectly hidden? It didn’t make sense to me. Picking up the camera I walked down to the lab to see if Dave was about. Better get the bollocking over with, I thought. Again, he was nowhere to be seen.

After the second session in the studio, I was scheduled for the lab. Dave was in there but didn’t say a word to me, not even a hi. While putting sleeves into DVD cases, he told Bjanca and I that he was having problems opening his Yahoo! Account. When I tried to help him, he started speaking to me and after that was fine, as if nothing had previously happened.

Aniko came running into the lab with some news for us. Whitney Houston has died at the age of 48. Looking shocked, Bjanca and I didn’t believe her. Apparently it’s all over the news, Whitney Houston apparently collapsed yesterday and died today? The first thing that popped into my mind was a drug overdose but Aniko said nothing’s been confirmed or denied. What a shock though. As usual, we are always the last to find these things out while on ship. Once again, we are all in a little bubble. A different world from the one on land.

During my last session Kate came over to speak to me. I was feeling a little down as I couldn’t get hold of the parents. The more I thought about it, the more worried I got. Even though I was trying to focus on my job, it was hard to concentrate, especially as we have two sea days before reaching St. Maarten; so if anything had happened there’s be no way of getting a flight home until 14th February. Kate told me to come down to her cabin after the team meeting and we’d have a few drinks and a chat.

The meeting went quickly, it was mainly about a couple of bad comments we’d had during the previous cruise. One was “I asked a photographer for help and she walked straight past me and ignored me.” Really? Before you ask, it wasn’t me! The only reply we had for that one was that the photographer may not have actually heard the guest, especially if it was during the last day when Shutters was packed to the rafters. I asked for the good comments which we’ll have within a couple of days.

I’m still not sure if I’ve been paid or Image have taken the money to pay for my flight. Come to think of it, I don’t even know how much I’ve earned!

A couple of hours down in Kate and Claire’s cabin was a giggle. Claire was trying to highlight Kate’s hair. When we told Claire the news about Whitney Houston, she didn’t believe us and generally thought it was a prank. Someone’s obviously got a sick mind! We had to log onto the internet and show her a news article stating Whitney Houston had died. Claire was absolutely gobsmacked but didn’t reduce to tears like she's anticipated! All in all, it was a good night to end a crap day!

Disneys Private Island

Disney’s Private Island

10th February 2012

Disney seem to have everything from a TV channel to cruise ships to a private island!

Today we’re on Disney’s private island Castaway Cay. The island is a lot bigger than I originally thought it would be and of course it’s pure Disney style.

Luckily for me, I’m back to work. I was almost pulling my hair out sitting in a tiny cabin from 11.30 – 08.00. After a night of films, I was ready for work and feeling much better.

Today I was shooting the closet thing Disney Cruise Line have to a gangway: characters next to the beach. My shooting shot was Mount Rustmore. First up was Pluto, then Minnie in her beachwear and finally Mickey Mouse. There was no need to smudge as the kids came stampeding to have their photos taken with the characters. When things got a little quieter I jumped in for a quick photo with Mickey and Minnie Mouse. Depending on the internet connection in the next couple of ports, I’ll try and upload the photos. After two hours shooting I had about 450 images surpassing my target of 400!

Carrying the equipment back to the ship was hard work, I’m definitely going to have some muscles when I sign off at the end of July!

Back on board, I’d arranged to meet Clarita to head out and explore the island. Clarita wanted to go to the beach which was fine by me. An hour and a half of relaxing on the beach, swimming in the crystal clear waters was a perfect plan in my eyes. Just as I was gathering my stuff together, Clarita cancelled because “she didn’t have time to go to the beach” so she was staying in her cabin to sleep.

Ship life is always fast paced, even when you are on your break. So if you are off from 13-15.00 you make the most of the time, get off the ship and do whatever you have/want to do. Either way, you’re running from place to place to get everything done on time, whether it’s getting back on board to have a shower, ready for work, or grabbing prints from the lab, legging it up the stairs to get to the gallery on time. That’s just the way ship life is. I don’t think Clarita has fully grasped the idea yet.

Heading up to Deck 5 Forward where the crew swimming pool is located I thought I’d have a little down time typing up my blog entries, catching some sunrays and chilling. I need to recharge my batteries before an evening in Shutters (photo gallery) selling as much as possible.

I know my wages this week aren’t going to be great thanks to training so I need to boost the amount up as much as possible. Unfortunately, I don’t think there’s the same promotion we had on Mariner of the Seas: buy four 10x8” photos and get a folio with a photo of the ship - free. It was a great incentive for guests to buy an extra photo, get a free folio and you bag the commission. It's only $1 but the amount soon starting racking up without you even realizing.

This morning I was talking to a guest who was interested in the photo packages we had to offer. There are only three packages.

The first is $299.95 which is the GTP! (Get the Picture!), same as we had on the Mariner. Only difference is here on Disney Magic you only get the photos on a CD. Printed images are not included, instead they come with a 50% discount.

The guest pointed out that Disney World offer the same package for just $99. I didn’t want to point out that Disney didn’t have to charge as much as Image does simply because every penny spent at Disney World goes straight into their pocket. So by spending $99 on photos is almost like a top up charge.

Think about it, you’ve spent hundreds of dollars on accommodation in the Disney Resort, paid more for multiple day entries, food, drink, souvenirs etc. The photos for $99 to Disney is just another service they can say they provide and another way for them to get a little more cash out of you. Image, on the other hand, are different, especially as they have to pay a large chunk of their money to Disney Cruise Line to be able to photograph the guests and sell them on board. Royal Caribbean took roughly $16 for each photo which we sold at $19.95 each. Do the math.

The second and third packages are Credits. The cheapest of the credits is $149.95 and gives you 20 credits. One 8x10” image is worth two credits while an 6x8” is one credit. The maximum saving is $50. The third is $249.50 and gives you 50 credits. But if you buy the third package, you might as well buy the GTP! Package. I’ve been looking at the packages and thinking how the hell can I push and sell them or even find a way of using one package against the other (it’s one of the many ways of closing and enticing guests to buy a particular package.)

As it’s the last day of the cruise, I’m hoping there’ll be a sudden rush for folios and packages – anything to boost our money.

Tomorrow I have to be at the Walt Disney theatre at 05.45 for immigration. As a non-US citizen I need an I-95 which is a visa allowing us off the ship when in US owned ports (Key West, Port Canaveral, St. Thomas etc.) Tomorrow, is also the day that I start going to the gym again, so I’m expecting to be sore for the next couple of days. As they say… no pain, no gain!
